Romeoville is an Illinois village situated on the banks of the Des Plaines River. The village had a population of 36,000 people in 2014 according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Romeoville is located about 30 miles south of Downtown Chicago, the largest city in Illinois.
The area Romeoville is located in was not inhabited by settlers until the late 1820s after the construction of Erie Canal in New York gave travelers easier access to the Great Lakes Plaines. The village was one of the last areas in Illinois to be occupied by Native Americans. After the Indian Removal Act became law under President Jackson, villages moved out of the area and white settlers moved in. In 1848, the construction of the Illinois and Michigan Canal was completed and connected the Great Lakes to the Mississippi River, providing a critical transportation hub that ran through the countryside connecting rural towns such as Romeoville. The village was incorporated in 1895 after a 42 to 20 vote. On January 21st, Romeoville was officially established as a village.
